A Note from Dr. Rashidchi

The 2026–27 school year is officially underway! On Wednesday, August 5, students returned to campuses filled with welcoming staff, excited classmates, and new opportunities to learn, grow, and connect.

Whether this was your child’s very first day of school, the beginning of their senior year, or one of the many meaningful years in between, we are grateful that your family is part of the Castro Valley Unified School District community.

Throughout the year, the CVUSD Community Connection will arrive with district news, celebrations, important reminders, upcoming events, and opportunities to get involved. We look forward to sharing the many ways our students, staff, families, and community partners make CVUSD such a special place.

Here’s to a wonderful year together!

CVUSD Culture Starts With Us

This year, we are embracing a districtwide theme: CVUSD Culture Starts With Us — Every Interaction Matters.

Culture is created through the everyday ways we speak, listen, respond, include, support, and care for one another. Every interaction is an opportunity to build a school community where students, staff, and families are treated with respect, empathy, and dignity—and where everyone feels a genuine sense of belonging.

Throughout the year, we will highlight how schools, departments, students, staff, and families are putting these values into action. Because the words we use matter, the choices we make matter, and creating a positive culture starts with each of us.

Phone-free schools reminder Supporting Focused, Engaged Learning

Beginning this school year, CVUSD’s updated student cell phone and personal device expectations are in effect across the district.

At elementary and middle schools, student phones and smartwatches must be turned off and stored throughout the school day. At the high school level, devices must be turned off and stored during instructional time, with supervised access permitted during designated breaks.

These expectations are intended to reduce distractions, support student well-being, encourage face-to-face connection, and create learning environments where students can be fully present. Accommodations will continue to be provided for students with documented medical needs, Individualized Education Programs, or Section 504 Plans.

Families are encouraged to review the expectations with their students and follow their school’s established procedures when they need to reach their child during the school day.
